School Nurses
Sight Savers is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive follow up eye care services to every Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade student who fails the Alabama Vision Screening Test and every Kindergarten student who fails the Mississippi Vision Screening Test in public schools.
After contacting parents, Sight Savers coordinates eye exams and prescribed treatments for eligible children. There is NO CHARGE to the family for our services other than to use available Medicaid, All Kids, or CHIP benefits for insured children. Families with private-pay vision insurance must use those benefits first before Sight Savers can evaluate any additional assistance. Sight Savers will directly contact the parents of most students who fail the Vision Screening Test, but when necessary we may ask the school to help get in touch with hard to reach parents.
Alabama School Nurses
The Alabama State Department of Education annually sponsors vision-screening for every Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th Grade student in Alabama’s public schools. Each child who fails their school vision-screening is referred to Sight Savers for comprehensive follow up eye care services. Sight Savers contacts each family directly to be sure they receive and understand the vision-screening results, and to offer assistance in scheduling eye exams, obtaining new or replacement eyeglasses, and coordinating other eye care treatments such as medications and surgeries on a case-by-case basis. When necessary, Sight Savers contacts school personnel (Nurses, Counselors, Special Ed teachers, Administrators) for assistance in contacting parent/guardian of children in need of eye care.
Your feedback is important to the success of our program, please complete and return our brief survey. You may mail the survey to Sight Savers America Attention: Tiffany Richardson, 1101 Hillcrest Road, Suite 201 Mobile, Alabama 36695 or fax the completed survey to 251-660-1099.
