Vision Screenings
Sight Savers America conducts vision screenings within the states that we serve. Our Vision Screeners are responsible for every aspect of the vision screening process from creating the screening schedule to conducting the actual screenings and reporting timely results back to the Sight Savers office. The Vision Screeners are trained to use a Plusoptix vision screening device which allows us to screen children in a time efficient manner that is non-invasive. This device not only allows us to electronically store each childās screening data on-site, but it also provides a more extensive screening report containing detailed data about the refractive measurements of the eye.
Our 6th grade Black Belt Vision Screening Program is an annual program where Sight Savers America becomes actively involved within the communities of the Black Belt Region of Alabama. We screen 3,000 children in over 40 public schools in the 17 Black Belt counties and then provide Sight Savers eye clinics in designated areas of the region in order to provide these children with access to eye care. Many of these rural communities do not have proper access to eye care, so our eye clinics allow these children to receive comprehensiveĀ eye exams with Ophthalmologists and Optometrists from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and the School of Optometry at no cost to the families.
The vision screenings that are conducted by Sight Savers America are simply a method for detecting possible vision problems and are not fully dilated eye exams. If any child is deemed to have failed one of our screenings, a Case Specialist from the Eye Care Services Department at Sight Savers America will contact the family to ensure that their child has proper access to eye care.
